Let Us Save Our Climate

I attended a CAFOD meeting on Sunday and was intrigued by the issues discussed and the number of people that turned up. CAFOD stands for Catholic Agency for Overseas Development. Their mission is to work along the worlds poorest people.

During the meeting, the speakers talked about climate change and how it affects various countries, especially those who already experience extreme weather conditions. They equally highlighted the significance of controlling energy  consumption in our various homes, places of work, etc.

Among many important issues discussed, included emulating country such as Germany that utilises more of solar energy. They were of the opinion that if Germans can do it despite not having much period of sunshine season then why can’t other countries do same?

Furthermore, we were encouraged to  sign a form which would ensure that the UK party leaders play their own part as the election draws near. Climate change posses a great threat to reducing poverty that exists in our society.

The event was concluded with a reflective moment and prayer. During the reflective exercise, we were asked to think about ways by which we can help reduce the impact on our climate. It could be by reducing our energy consumption, walking more, commuting by public transport than using own cars, or even by making a colleague or friend aware of the climate change.

Frankly speaking, I am pleased with the work of CAFOD in underdeveoped countries, as they go about to reach out to people in need.

Have a beautiful Month. Lets save our climate.

Hope For Countries In Crisis

We were in a gathering and as time went by I seemed to be disengaged from the chains of activities on display. I was basically staring and smiling; when need be although completely drawn into the the conversation of the people behind me. At first, I thought they were disturbing but moments later I eventually listened more attentively to them.

They consisted of three group of men and were obviously Africans and I understood their vernacular too. They chatted in loud tones, laughed and argued not minding not paying much attention to those around them. Infact, their attitude clearly showed ‘join us if you wish or you can simply ignore us’.

Crisis in Ukraine

Their discussion comprised global political issues, wars and crisis. They talked about past and current situations in different countries like Ukraine, Russia, Syria and the rest of them. To me, it sounded more like news update and they all seem to be varsed in the topics they discussed. They mentioned Putin and how he has been handling the ongoing situation in Crimea, Ukraine and couldn’t wait for Sunday’s referendum. In addition, they mentioned how the US system and UK economy might be affected.Names like Gaddafi and Mugabe were on their lips and they later narrowed down to African countries and discussed Nigeria in particular.  They talked about history and I enjoyed every bit of it, how Nigerians have been handling politics for the the past twenty years and the richness and unique of their oil and gas. They seemed to know a lot, when one comes up with a point the other will either criticize with a handful of facts be it positively or otherwise.

As they talked, the youngest among them painstakingly added that issues in Nigeria are so dreadful with so many churches in every nook and cranny of the streets yet no evidence of a christian or a caring nation. To my surprise, he punctuated his intense talk by saying that he doesn’t even pray any more.

It sounded like a bombshell to me but neither of them dragged it any further as they kept on chatting about the menaces in different places. I was then distracted and went off with a friend. If I am asked, it is of no good to us living a life without prayer because without God we are nothing. Amidst adversities, there are so many things one can still be grateful for or we can even pray for turnaround of situations, perhaps that can even be a time we need prayers most.

Obviously, we live in a time filled with economic meltdowns and hardship worst still, coupled with countries fighting within themselves and with another but we should not lose hope. We can pray for ourselves, our leaders  and our countries and especially for all the countries in distress around this time, asking that they live justly and peacefully.

Coming Together As One.

I am delighted for having attended the “Ecumenical worship service for christian unity 2014” which took place at an anglican church in my neighbourhood. It was announced in my church and those who can make it were urged to come to, if for nothing else to at least represent our parish.

It was my first time in that church,as a matter of fact in an anglican church. When I got there, I met the first set of people who were from my church(catholic) and few members of the host church(anglican) who were running around to see that the day went well. Moments later our priest arrived and gradually the empty seats were being occupied. I admired the magnificent decoration and heavenly atmosphere.

The host Vicar welcomed the congregation, we were comprised of; Catholic( 2 parishes), Anglican, Reformed and Methodist churches, five different parishes were present. It was wonderful having all the churches in the area come together for such a unity service.

Meanwhile, over the years I have heard that the catholic and anglican ways of teachings are very similar to each other and had to testify to it that day. They were so true be it in the hymns, penitential act, readings and bidding prayers. Moreover, I loved the response during the prayers, it goes this way-
….Gracious God, hear our prayer,
    And in your love, answer.
I equally noticed the prayers were based on the eight millenium development goals, which addressed the major global issues.  On the contrary, there was no creed nor communion; not that I expected them anyway.

The sermon was very inspiring as the Minister encouraged us to be good followers of christ. He admonished us to promote Gods name and the church although he spoke against people who worship a particular church rather than God himself.

As he preached, a feminine voice was heard from behind though what she was saying was quite unclear. It happened that the voice kept disturbing us. She interrupted him and thereby gained audience. A man followed her immediately who without doubt wanted to drag her out but had to let her talk as she kept saying she wanted to say something-

“I have been through a lot in life, I know God.
I am Linda….As she talked she demonstrated, letting her hands go as free as they can.
I have been through ups and down
I will tell you you this:
Never give up and always pray!
Never give up and always pray!”(I was startled when she said that, some of the congregation were nodding like it was a divine message).
Waving her hands she said “God bless you all”
She made sign of the cross twice before she was led out.
The congregation applauded her.

Later, the Vicar ended the sermon by saying “United we move forward against divisions and promote christianity by the unity of all christians.”

To sum it up, I had a wonderful experience being that I learnt a lot that day and from my point of view, I believe that christianity is about coming together to worship God.

Your Legacy Lives on, Mandela.

Mandela

I recall those days in school when we sang a song that tells the story of Mandela and apartheid in South Africa. We chanted lots of words among them were – nepotism, tribalism- and the rest of them. In reality, most of us loved this bit because of the rhyme not that we necessarily understood what they truly meant at that time.

Over the years,  I have read lots of his works and how he fought for what he believed in. I admired his courage. In my opinion, his strength and character are out of this world. When asked who a rare gem is, I would simply say it was Mandela.

Nelson and Winnie Mandela the day he was freed.
Below is a list of some of his inspiring and lifetime quotes:
  • “If I had my time over I would do the same again. So would any man who dares call himself a man.
  • “I like friends who have independent minds because they tend to make you see problems from all angles.”
  • “Real leaders must be ready to sacrifice all for the freedom of their people.”
  •  “A fundamental concern for others in our individual and community lives would go a long way in making the world the better place we so passionately dreamt of.”
  •  “Everyone can rise above their circumstances and achieve success if they are dedicated to and passionate about what they do.”
  •  “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
  •  “I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”
  • “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”
  •  “Resentment is like drinking poison and then hoping it will kill your enemies.”
  •  “Lead from the back — and let others believe they are in front.”
  • “Do not judge me by my successes, judge me by how many times I fell down and got back up again.”
  •  “I hate race discrimination most intensely and in all its manifestations. I have fought it all during my life; I fight it now, and will do so until the end of my days.”
  •  “A good head and a good heart are always a formidable combination.”
  • “Without democracy there cannot be peace.”
  • “We are fighting for a society where people will cease thinking in terms of colour.”
  • “When a man has done what he considers to be his duty to his people and his country, he can rest in peace.”
  • “Reconciliation means working together to correct the legacy of past injustice.” “I can rest only for a moment, for with freedom come responsibilities, and I dare not linger, for my long walk is not yet ended.”
  • “For to be free is not merely to cast off one’s chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”
  • “If you want to make peace with your enemy, you have to work with your enemy. Then he becomes your partner.”
  • “Real leaders must be ready to sacrifice all for the freedom of their people.”
  • “When people are determined they can overcome anything.”
The list is endless. There is a particular one; not mentioned above that I found very powerful. According to him, if he had come out of prison with so much hatred and bitterness he would have still be in prison. I found that very interesting because I think it has a deep meaning and shows that he had a very good heart and was a wise man.
In addition, when I read the speech on his trial in 1964, I was surprised how he ended such a lengthy and well-structured write-up by saying  ”It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if needs be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die”. That reminded me of a biblical verse where Jesus said, Father if it is your will let this cup pass me by- during His time of temptations. Making such a statement and standing by it during his 27years in prison and afterwards, shows the content of his character. Unbelievable, how he called for reconciliation even when his own people were willing to fight, he was not influenced and stood for justice and truth. And he achieved them. He had a large heart which all and sundry benefited from. He brought justice to his people and made all Blacks proud.

In my eyes, Mandela is a saint. Despite suffering from tuberculosis, he was still the hero and man of the people.

He was a blessing to this generation and those to come. Rest in the bosom of the Lord Madiba; where there will be absolute peace and love, Amen. Your legacy lives on.

What’s going on?

Photo culled from the internet

I have actually seen lots of beggars and some homeless people but there was something about that woman I couldn’t just place. In fact, there is a particular man that do lie under the shades of trees and flowers on a corner in my area, although I have not seen him for sometime since winter arrived, I hope he has found a better place to lay his head at night.

So, it was a very cold day and I was rushing to a function but all of a sudden I was stopped by a woman; who at first was speaking a language I didn’t understand. I looked at her and she went on for about a minute or so before I was able to hear hunger and money. As she talked, the little child she was holding was busy playing and smiling.

Unfortunately, I had only few coins with me and handed them over to her and she mumbled words that sounded like she was thanking me or something close to that. Although my mind was occupied by other activities I couldn’t help but think about this woman and the small boy.
I have seen lots of beggars but why it seems to be very rampant now is what I don’t understand, even in this unbearable weather.
Later in the day, I discussed it with a colleague and he said some cultures simply like begging and can’t stay away from it. He added that some couple of years ago, some women carrying drugged children were seen on trains begging for money. That as a matter of fact, times have changed for good. No doubt he was right but I was of the opinion that when people look relatively fit it is better they find themselves a job;be it a menial one, as long as it brings them some quid rather than wandering the streets begging for money.
The rate at which beggars are seen on the streets of London now are very alarming. If you see one today, the next day it increases to three or more. Does it all boil down to hard economy?
What’s going on?
Meanwhile, I recall a friend telling me the other day that when a haggard man begged her for money in an eatery she simply told him to choose something and she paid for him. That way she made sure he didn’t spend her money on purchasing some cigarettes or booze. At least, she provided him with a meal, which made a difference.
Well, we should try in our own little ways to help people. That little could mean so much to them.

‘Huge Nigeria’

I ran into a Brasilian, we got talking and exchanging one or two ideas about ourselves and where we are from.

She said she is from Brasil and mentioned her hometown, which I cannnot even remember anymore.

At some point in our discussion I said I am from Nigeria in Africa.
Do you know there? I asked.
“Nigeria is such a huge country who doesn’t know there”, she replied.
I was like really ? But we didn’t talk further about our countries again.

Well, I hope that ‘huge’ actually means good or simply denotes positive trends. Maybe I should have said, emm… Sorry, huge in what sense do you mean?

Nevertheless, am glad I never asked.

My lovely People.

Man must survive. Pure organics.

The need for a better life.

Just read the story of a 17year old Alice Pyne who died today after battling with a terminal cancer for five years.Her story was such a captivating one as she drew a list of various activities she needed to do before falling prey to death. Amongst these chains of activities were;

  • o get everyone eligible to join a bone marrow register
  • To get EVERYONE to have a bucket list
  • To get to the Royal Garden party in May
  • DONE – To buy a static caravan for my charity
  • DONE – To actually receive my B.E.M. medal
  • DONE – To go whale watching
  • DONE – To go to my school leavers prom
  • DONE – To meet Take That
  • DONE – To design a Emma Bridgewater Mug to sell for charity

To mention but a few, and she marked each one done when accomplished.Photos of me

One of that her updates that lured me into reading lots of her write-ups was a particular day she had difficulty in blogging and was pleading to everyone to help to her tweet “onelifeliveit” and link it to her blog. You won’t believe she mentioned spelling life and live correctly as it wouldn’t make sense when spelt wrong.According to her, the tweet was to help raise funds and create awareness for her charity. Meannwhile, She and her mother have been driving her round the town in search of unlocked wifi signal.

What a strong character.

I like seeing inspiring people especially when it happens to be young person.I wonder the kind of confidence these kids possess because I recollect another story of a little boy who was struggling with his life too and wished he could see as many sports cars  as possible, which through the help of his father’s online page was a huge success as more than 2,000 cars made it, and the little boy was overjoyed. He passed away few days afterwards. The interesting part is that they usually channel such acts to charity, thereby helping other numerous victims.

Life needs to be enjoyed to its fullest as nobody is certain of the exact day the curtain will be drawn.
Based on the fact that death is inevitable and can strike at any time, irrespective of the age, it leaves me no choice than to wonder why we find it difficult to help each other in the little ways we can to make life less stressful, at least.

In my opinion, these aforementioned kids are in Countries where they have great support systems. They have family, relatives, friends, health personnel, and of utmost important the government to carter for them and this goes a long way to help them live a  happy and fulfilled life before their premature deaths. In such cases, Victims are faced mainly with circumstances surrounding their ailment and / or management procedures and no added problem of poverty, ignorance and so on, which is the trend in most countries.

Unfortunately, they lived for a short period yet they tend to leave a legacy which many people cannot achieve even at old age.Their good deeds touched lives in peculiar ways and they are and will always be  remembered and celebrated.

My heartfelt sympathy goes to all sufferers of terminal illnesses (cancer) especially, kids who live in the remote parts of the world or under-developed countries. I think of them because their story takes a different turn, their illness might not be diagnosed, niether treated nor managed. They perceive life as filled with pain, sadness and torture while awaiting the day the gnawing teeth of death will bite them.

There are certain contributions that we can make in our various societies to enable others live a happy and satisfactory lives. It will be very useful, no matter how little. If only The government and leaders of most countries are fully aware of the ill-effects of their governance on their citizens, they will be forced to have a rethink and do what is expected of them.

Will they? I guess they will not, owing to the fact that their decisions project acts of extreme selfishness, embezzlement and corruption. Maybe they still can change someday.
What a world! The rich enjoys life and the poor suffers till death.

God help Us all. One love.
